The town of Gunter was established in the 1880s by Jot Gunter, a developer of Texas real estate and a prominent Grayson County businessman. Born in North Carolina in 1845, he came to Texas to practice law after serving in the Confederate Army. By the mid-1890s his ranch exceeded 20,000 acres, and the town of Gunter, incorporated in 1914, was named for him.
