San Pedro River Preserve in Dudleyville, Arizona, protects eight hundred twenty acres along the Lower San Pedro River under the ownership and management of The Nature Conservancy. Acquired to safeguard habitat for the southwestern willow flycatcher, a rare riparian bird, it includes about two miles of cottonwood and willow river corridor, an important habitat type along this part of the river. Project funding came through the Roosevelt Lake Mitigation Project of the Salt River Project. The preserve is closed to the general public, with access allowed for research and permitted groups. In July 2005, the Great Dudleyville Fire burned two hundred fifty acres near the preserve and destroyed thirteen structures before being controlled.
