Pinal Peak, rising 7,848 feet in southern Gila County, is the highest point in the Pinal Mountains and the highest land between the Salt and Gila rivers before they join, making it visible from great distances. Although not the county’s highest point, it is one of Arizona’s most prominent peaks. The surrounding mountains have been used by Native Americans since the 12th century, and nearby Besh-Ba-Gowah reflects the area’s long human history. Spanish explorers in the late 17th century gave the range its modern name, and the U.S. Army later surveyed it. Today the peak lies in Tonto National Forest and serves both recreation and communications.
