Mound Hill Archaeological Site, also called the Nelson Gay Mound, is a prehistoric earthwork in Kentucky’s Bluegrass region north of Winchester along Stoner Creek. The largest mound in a local cluster of Native American earthworks, it stood out for its hilltop position between Stoner Creek and Pretty Run. An 1884 survey recorded it as 240 feet in circumference and 20 feet high, with an elongated form and central depression that may reflect erosion or the merging of multiple mounds. Associated nearby mounds yielded pottery, a pipe, and many stone box graves. Mound Hill is believed to have been built by people of the Adena culture and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1978.
