On July 18, 1862, during its first Kentucky raid, Gen. John Hunt Morgan's cavalry rode to Paris from victory at Cynthiana. After citizen groups held out for days, they surrendered. Warned of a nearby Union force, the Confederates escaped pursuit and returned to Tennessee. While Confederates held Lexington, Georgetown, and the Frankfort Capitol, they occupied Paris for three weeks in September 1862.
