Southern University was founded here in 1856 by the Methodist Church, weathered war and Reconstruction, and prospered in the late 1800’s before moving to Birmingham in 1918 when it merged with Birmingham College, which had been founded in 1896 by Methodists, as part of Birmingham Southern College.
