Susquehanna became an important hub for the Erie Railroad in connecting to the Great Lakes, and with the discovery of coal in the Forest City and Carbondale area of Pennsylvania, it became more important. The Starrucca Viaduct was completed in 1848 after 800 men worked around the clock and finished it in 8 months. Starrucca Station was built in 1865.
