On May 7, 1864, McPherson's Army of the Tennessee, the 15th and 16th A.C., reached this point on Little Chickamauga Creek while en route east to Snake Cr. Gap, arrived in the evening, and camped for the night. The camp lay close to two gaps in Taylor's Ridge, a barrier that Federal forces had to pass on the way to Villanow, Snake Cr. Gap, and the road to Resaca. That night, Col. Sprague's 2d brigade of Veatch's 4th Div., 16th A.C., was sent four miles south to Ship's Gap, which it seized at 9 p.m., a surprise move that ensured an unopposed eastward march of the 16th A.C. on May 8. The 15th A.C. passed the ridge at Gordon Springs Gap the same day.
