Many salt wells remained in this area from the last Ice Age, and salt making became an early business at Grant's Lick. John Grant was one of the owners, and the entire area took its name from him. Mary (Boone) Bryan, sister to Col. Daniel Boone, is buried in Grant's Lick (Oakland) Cemetery.
