Johnson Road Covered Bridge in Scioto Township near Petersburg, Ohio, was built around 1870 by Robert W. Smith using his 1867 patented Smith truss design. Covered bridges once served as practical parts of rural transportation, and this structure survives as one of Jackson County’s reminders of that era. Although Smith truss bridges were once common in the county during the 19th century, this is the only known Smith truss covered bridge still standing in Ohio. Its rarity and historical importance were formally recognized when it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1984.
