Leach Botanical Garden is a 16-acre public garden in southeast Portland along Johnson Creek, combining cultivated collections with a wooded creekside landscape. It began in 1931 as the private garden of botanist Lilla Leach and her husband, John, who developed the property and built their home there. Lilla Leach became a notable American botanist, receiving the Garden Club of America’s Eloise Payne Luquer Medal in 1950. After the Leaches died, the garden passed to the City of Portland, and the Portland Parks Bureau acquired it in 1972. Today it contains more than 2,000 plants and remains a place of horticulture, native landscapes, and plant study.
