Lee Vining Peak is an 11,690-foot summit in the northern Sierra Nevada, within the Hoover Wilderness and Inyo National Forest near Mono Lake and the town of Lee Vining. Its importance lies in its dramatic local relief, rising steeply above Mono Lake and Lee Vining Creek despite the crowded high Sierra skyline, with runoff draining toward the lake. The peak was named for Leroy Vining, an early pioneer who founded a mining camp in 1852 that later became Lee Vining. Its official name evolved from Leevining Peak in 1901 to Lee Vining Peak in 1955, preserving a link to the mining-era settlement of the Mono Lake region.
