Schweitzer is a four-season resort in northern Idaho in the Selkirk Mountains above Lake Pend Oreille, known for broad views, extensive ski terrain, and a long regional skiing history. Named from a local legend about a Swiss hermit, skiing began there by 1933, and the resort opened in 1963 after Jack Fowler promoted it as a closer alternative for Spokane skiers. It expanded through the 1960s and 1970s with new lifts, lodging, roads, and development into Colburn Basin. After private ownership, financial collapse, bankruptcy, and several ownership changes, Schweitzer continued growing with upgraded lifts, village amenities, and year-round recreation while keeping its mountain setting central to its identity.
