Chimney Rock is a 7,124-foot mountain in northern Idaho’s southern Selkirk Mountains near Priest Lake, notable for its dramatic granitic summit tower, steep rise above the Pack River, and importance as a regional landmark. Its slopes drain into the Priest Lake and Pack River watersheds within the Pend Oreille River basin. Officially named for its chimney-like form, the peak has long drawn climbers; the first recorded ascent came on September 8, 1934, by John Carey, Mart Chamberlain, Fred Thieme, and Byron Ward via the West Face. Nicknamed the “Lightning rod of North Idaho,” it is also known for severe weather in its alpine subarctic climate.
