Sheep Mountain is a 10,097-foot peak in Montana’s Gallatin Range, about 39 miles south of Bozeman, on the boundary of Yellowstone National Park and Gallatin National Forest. Within the Gallatin Petrified Forest, one of the largest petrified forests dating to the Eocene Epoch, it rises sharply about 1,800 feet in a mile above the headwaters of North Fork Specimen Creek. Its north slope drains to the Yellowstone River through Tom Miner Creek, while its south slope drains into Specimen Creek, a tributary of the Gallatin River. Remote and subarctic, it has long, very cold winters, mild summers, and a microwave reflector on its summit.
