Pine Island National Wildlife Refuge is a 601-acre protected area on La Costa Island in Pine Island Sound along Florida’s southwest coast, between Charlotte Harbor and Sanibel Island. Part of the United States National Wildlife Refuge System, it was established on September 15, 1908, making it one of the older federally protected refuge sites. It is now administered within the J. N. Ding Darling National Wildlife Refuge Complex, connecting it to a larger group of coastal conservation lands in this region of Florida.
