The J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles spans two campuses, the Getty Center in Brentwood and the Getty Villa in Pacific Palisades, with collections divided between European art and photography at the Center and the art of ancient Greece, Rome, and Etruria at the Villa. Founded in 1974 at Malibu, it became the world’s richest museum after a 1982 inheritance and expanded through major acquisitions, especially illuminated manuscripts. Its history also includes major antiquities disputes that led to returns to Italy, Greece, and Sicily. In recent years it has remained highly visible through online public engagement and efforts to protect its collections from wildfire risk.
