The Getty Center is the hilltop Los Angeles campus of the Getty Museum and the Getty Trust, uniting art galleries, research, conservation, and gardens in a single complex in Brentwood above Interstate 405. Developed after the original J. Paul Getty Museum outgrew its Pacific Palisades site, the new property was acquired in 1983, designed by Richard Meier, and opened in 1997 after a long, costly construction. Its travertine-clad buildings, dramatic views, tram approach, and Central Garden made it both an architectural landmark and a major cultural institution. With extensive collections and Getty’s research and preservation organizations on site, it became one of the nation’s most visited museums.
