Moses Stepp
Military
1
Moses Stepp was a colorful frontiersman whose grave’s ancient headstone gives his lifespan as 1735 to 1855. He enlisted for three short periods during the Revolution and fought Indians and Tories in the western Carolinas and eastern Tennessee. Legend holds that the Cherokees captured and tortured him by nailing his ears to a tree, but he tore himself loose and escaped. In 1826 he came to this area and remained here for the rest of his life.
