Old Mt. Comfort was first settled about 1830 when Solomon Tuttle built his log house. A few years later his son-in-law, W. D. Cunningham, built the two-story brick home that is still standing. This home witnessed many historic events, including the passing of the Cherokees on their Trail of Tears in 1839 and the events of 1861-65. Among the pioneers buried in the old cemetery are Tuttle, Cunningham, Pittman, Carnahan, Appleby, Deane, and others. The cemetery also holds the first four Confederate soldiers from the county to die in the Civil War, at Wilson's Creek in August 1861: Bell, Brown, McCurdy, and Fullbright.
