The Soule Memorial Fountain was built in 1907 after Mrs. Carrie Soule donated it in memory of her late husband, George Gary Soule. In 1953, a truck driver from the Grand Rapids Hide Company, on his way to the Murray Packing Co. in Gun Plain Township, suffered a seizure at Plainwell’s main intersection and rear-ended a parked police cruiser, pushing it into the fountain and destroying it. In 1970, the Jaycees spearheaded a fund-raising program to replace the fountain that stands today. The replacement was built much closer to Hicks Park to create less of a traffic hazard. Because materials from the original fountain were hard to duplicate, a much simpler version was built, and one original stone was found and reused, linking the past with the present.
