Jay Nixon State Park, also called Jay Nixon Backcountry, is an undeveloped Missouri state park located mainly in Reynolds County, with a smaller section in Iron County, beside Taum Sauk Mountain State Park and the Ketcherside Conservation Area. Its creation was announced by the Missouri Department of Natural Resources in January 2017. Initially presented as a park without facilities and with limited access from the Ozark Trail, it was soon listed as closed with no public access. Named for Governor Jay Nixon, the park quickly became the focus of controversy, prompting legislation in January 2017 to rename it Proffitt Mountain State Park.
