On June 4, 1864, Ireland’s 3d Brigade of Geary’s 2d Division, 20th A.C., U.S., seized, repaired, and held Mason’s Bridge after Confederate forces retreating eastward had wrecked it. On June 6, the Army of the Cumberland, U.S., commanded by Maj. Gen. George H. Thomas, crossed Allatoona Creek here en route from the Dallas-New Hope front in Paulding County to the Kennesaw Mtn. environs. The Army of the Cumberland consisted of the 4th, 14th, and 20th Corps, which formed the center of Sherman’s forces during the twenty-nine days of conflict in Cobb County from June 5 to July 3.
