Mountain Top Arboretum
Nature
Mountain Top Arboretum is a 200-acre public garden in Tannersville in New York’s Catskill Mountains, set at about 2,400 feet near the upper edge of the New York City watershed. Founded in 1977 from a seven-acre planting by the Ahrens family, it grew into a landscape of managed gardens, trails, and boardwalks connecting meadows, wetlands, forest, and exposed Devonian bedrock. Its displays focus on northeastern native plant communities and cold-hardy native and exotic trees suited to mountain conditions, while Spruce Glen preserves extensive wild forest and wetland habitats. With diverse plant collections, abundant wildlife, and year-round trails, it serves education, research, recreation, and ecological stewardship.
