Mount Agassiz is a 13,899-foot peak in California’s Sierra Nevada at the north end of the Palisades near Bishop Pass, on the boundary of Kings Canyon National Park and Inyo National Forest. One of the state’s 20 highest mountains, it is the northernmost major Palisades summit and is regarded as the easiest to climb. Its name originated in 1879, when Lilbourne Winchell honored Swiss-American scientist Louis Agassiz, though the name first referred to a different nearby peak before the United States Geological Survey fixed it on the present mountain. The summit is especially valued for combining great height with several climbing routes, including a relatively accessible non-technical ascent.
