Tovrea Castle, a forty-four-acre Phoenix landmark at 5041 East Van Buren Street, was built between 1929 and 1931 by Alessio Carraro as the hotel centerpiece of a planned resort. Known locally as the Wedding Cake Castle for its four-tiered form, it combines vernacular Italianate design with some Art Deco details. E. A. and Della Tovrea bought the property in 1931 and made it a private residence, though Carraro was its original builder. After later decline, the city restored the grounds, which now contain thousands of cacti. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1996, the site is now publicly operated with guided tours.
