ASU Gammage is a performing arts center on the Arizona State University campus in Tempe, named for former president Grady Gammage and regarded as one of the last public commissions associated with Frank Lloyd Wright. Conceived after the collapse of an earlier campus auditorium and gymnasium roof, it drew on Wright’s unbuilt circular opera house design for Baghdad. Wright and Gammage both died before completion, and William Wesley Peters guided the project, which was built from 1962 to 1964 and opened with the Philadelphia Orchestra under Eugene Ormandy. Recognized on the National Register of Historic Places, it remains a major theater and a notable late expression of Wright’s vision.
