History
9
Tahlonteeskee was the western Cherokee capitol from 1829 to 1839 and the court ground for the Cherokee Nation. It was named for the chief who secured the establishment of Dwight Mission in Arkansas Territory. His brother, John Jolly, served at this capitol as Chief, and Sam Houston often visited there. Chief Jolly gave Houston the famous name "The Raven"—Colonah—an old Cherokee war title.
