In Skillman, New Jersey, the Stoutsburg Sourland African American Museum occupies the historic Mount Zion African Methodist Episcopal Church, a congregation founded in 1866 by African American residents of the Sourland area descended from both free and enslaved people. First established in Zion and moved to Skillman in 1899, the church served for decades as both a house of worship and a community gathering place, hosting camp meetings into the 1930s and regular services until 2005. The museum grew from research by Elaine Buck and Beverly Mills and now interprets the region’s long African American history.
