Alvin's first cemetery was acquired by the city in 1892. Its oldest legible inscription, dated 1889, marks the grave of pioneer and Civil War veteran G. W. Durant. Many early settlers are buried here, along with several victims of the 1900 hurricane. In 1953, the cemetery's name was changed to Oak Park.
