At the Battle of Reams Station, Robert E. Lee prevented Federal forces from destroying more of the Petersburg (& Weldon) Railroad and kept much of his supply line intact, but the Confederate victory was one of several tactical Southern successes that amounted to strategic Union victories. With more men and more supplies than Lee, U.S. Grant struck first one side of the Confederate line and then the other, forcing Lee to react by shifting his already exhausted men back and forth with each new Union attack. The siege of Petersburg continued until April 1865, when Grant cut the last supply line to Petersburg, the South Side Railroad. The Confederates then abandoned Petersburg and Richmond, and a week later, on April 9, 1865, Robert E. Lee surrendered the Army of Northern Virginia to Ulysses S. Grant at Appomattox Court House.
