Gen. George W. Morgan's 9,000 USA force occupied Cumberland Gap from June 18 to Sept. 17, 1862. Cut off from supplies, Morgan began a 200-mile retreat, and on the way through here the USA force was harassed by CSA Morgan's Raiders. The failure of reinforcements caused a CSA withdrawal at Grayson on Oct. 1. The Union retreat from Cumberland Gap to Greenup on the Ohio River was made in 16 days. The area was also part of Confederate raids and invasions in Kentucky associated with Lt. Gen. N. B. Forrest's raids, Brig. Gen. John H. Morgan's raids, Gen. Braxton Bragg's invasion, and Maj. Gen. E. Kirby Smith's invasion.
