Centenary College was a Methodist college that opened on November 1, 1841, at its original site two miles northwest, with the Rev. T.C. Thornton as president, followed by the Hon. D.O. Shattuck. In 1845 it was removed to Jackson, Louisiana, as Centenary College of Louisiana.
