Mendota Light, or Bete Grise Light, was built on Michigan’s Keweenaw Peninsula to guide vessels between Lake Superior and Lac La Belle through the Mendota Ship Canal, but mariners found it of little practical use and it was decommissioned after only a year. Its tower was removed, though the keeper’s house remained. After ships sheltering in the bay during an 1892 storm recognized the need for a harbor light, a new lighthouse was built on the original foundations. Automated in 1933 and decommissioned again in 1956, it later became a private residence before being conserved, with its original fourth-order Fresnel lens restored and relit in 1998.
