In 1885, the town erected Northfield Civil War Memorial in grateful remembrance of its sons who heroically risked their lives in defense of their country in the War of 1861, naming those who served in the 1st through 17th regiments, the 1st Cavalry, the 1st and 3rd Battery Artillery, the Veteran Reserve Corps, and the U.S. Navy.
