Mount Jefferson, in Coos County, New Hampshire, is the state’s third highest peak and a prominent summit in the Presidential Range of the White Mountains. Named for Thomas Jefferson, it is known for its rugged shape, harsh alpine environment, and dramatic terrain formed by ridges and glacial cirques, including Jefferson Ravine, Castle Ravine, and the Great Gulf. Near its talus-covered summit cone lies Monticello Lawn, a broad alpine patch, and its eastern flank holds the nearly perennial snowfield called The Beach. A popular but demanding route, the Caps Ridge Trail climbs from Jefferson Notch, the highest public road point in New Hampshire, in a short but steep ascent.
