After Brandon Township organized in 1880, a two-room wood-frame schoolhouse was built in 1885 as the first schoolhouse. Alma Langhout taught there during the 1914-1915 school year. That building was moved south across Elm Street to make room for a new school built in 1916. The 1916 Brandon School was a two-story brick building with a basement, built after Brandon consolidated with area schools in 1915 to form the Brandon Independent Consolidated School. It was designed for 125 students, with two classrooms, a hallway, and a teacher's room on each floor. The first-floor west room held the first, second, and third grades, the east room the fourth, fifth, and sixth grades, and the second-floor east room the seventh and eighth grades, while the west room housed a newly formed three-year high school that was accredited in 1921. Brandon High School's first graduating class finished in 1923, and the last graduated in 1967 before completion of Brandon Valley High School on South Splitrock Boulevard. In 1940, an addition on the east provided more classrooms, a stage, and a gymnasium. The 1916 school continued in classroom use until 1988, then served as storage until 2005, when the first floor was leased to the Brandon Historical Society for the Brandon Area Museum. Although the first floor was remodeled, the building became dilapidated and was razed in 2016. The earlier 1885 schoolhouse was later remodeled into a home and was still lived in by Brandon residents in 2022.
