In the 1830’s, tin miners from Cornwall, England came to southwestern Wisconsin to work newly discovered lead ore deposits. In some localities they built stone cottages similar to those in their homeland. Shake Rag, the greatest concentration of these homes, took its name from the meal-time custom of women shaking rags to call the men from the mines on the opposite hill.
