Hillside Mission was established in 1882 by Rev. John Murdock under the auspices of Friends Society. This noted school was attended by both Indian and white children. In this vicinity was the home of Wm. C. Rogers, the last elected principal chief of the Cherokee Nation, who served from 1903 to 1917. His grave, and that of George Tyner, Cherokee, are in Mission Cemetery.
