On Dec. 26, 1861, at a site 3.5 miles northwest of here, Col. Jas. McIntosh of the 2nd Ark. Mtd. Rifles routed Loyal Union Indian forces. The battle began with fire from the Indian line on Patriot's Hill, 2 miles southwest. The Loyal Indians finally fled into Kansas.
