At Caving Banks Bend on Bird Creek, nine miles northeast and southeast of this site, the Battle of Chusto-Talasah took place on December 9, 1861, when Opothleyahola's Union Indians forced the retreat of Colonel D.H. Cooper's Confederate troops.
