Beckwourth Pass, the lowest pass in the Sierra Nevada Mountains, was discovered in 1851 by James P. Beckwourth. It is associated with the pioneers who passed along this trail, whose perseverance was praised in lines declaring that no desert waste nor bold redskins could swerve them from this western stand, and that nothing could dismay their courage as they trudged onward day by day.
