On Simpson Creek is the site of the fort built by John Powers in 1771. Nearby is the grave of Colonel Benjamin Wilson, soldier and settler. Joseph Johnson lived here; he was the only Virginia governor from west of the Alleghenies and the first elected by popular vote.
