Kentenia State Forest is a protected forest in Harlan County, Kentucky, on the south side of Pine Mountain, with lands scattered across seven tracts in the rugged southeastern Kentucky mountains. It holds an important place in Kentucky conservation history as the state's first state forest, established in 1919 after the coal company Kentenia-Cantron donated the land. The forest is reached by Little Shepherd Trail, a narrow 38-mile road along the crest of Pine Mountain between U.S. 119 and U.S. 421. Because the route is only partly paved and partly runs through the forest, the area retains a notably remote character.
