Emory Peak is the highest summit in the Chisos Mountains of Big Bend National Park and the highest point in Brewster County, Texas. Named for William H. Emory, chief surveyor of the U.S. Boundary Survey of 1852, it appears modest from the Chisos Basin but stands out more clearly from the west. Reaching the summit requires a strenuous hike over steep, rocky terrain with about 2,500 feet of elevation gain and a careful final rock scramble. Along the route are high-desert plants and wildlife, including mule deer, Mexican jays, mountain lions, and bears. The summit offers broad views and also contains modern radio and solar equipment.
