Townsend Point is a 7,574-foot summit in the Chisos Mountains of far West Texas within Big Bend National Park. It is the second-highest peak in the Chisos and the park, and nineteenth in elevation in Texas. Formed of Oligocene extrusive volcanic rock, it reflects the volcanic geology of the range. Its slopes support juniper, oak, and piñon in a hot arid climate, and its limited runoff drains to Fresno Creek and Juniper Draw within the Rio Grande watershed. Rising about 3,250 feet above Juniper Canyon in two miles, it has dramatic local relief. Its name, officially adopted in 1981, honors Everett Ewing Townsend, a founder of Big Bend National Park.
