Casa Grande Peak is a prominent summit in the Chisos Mountains of Big Bend National Park, notable less for its statewide rank than for how sharply it rises about 2,000 feet above Chisos Basin in under a mile. The mountain is a volcanic dome linked to the Pine Canyon caldera and formed roughly 32 to 35 million years ago during the volcanic period that shaped much of the range. In a hot, arid climate, its lower slopes support juniper, oak, and piñon, with runoff draining toward the Rio Grande watershed. Its Spanish name, meaning “big house,” reflects its castle-like appearance.
