The Guthrey Archeological Site in Saline County, Missouri, near the Missouri River east of Miami, is the earliest known Oneota occupation area identified in Missouri. Its main period of occupation is estimated at about 1350 to 1400, though evidence suggests both earlier and later habitation may have occurred. Investigated archaeologically in the summer of 1964 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1970, the site connects Missouri to the broader Oneota culture of the Upper Midwest. At Guthrey, that presence reflects a community sustained by hunting, fishing, gardening, and gathering wild food plants.
