Hendon Hill Cemetery is the resting place of African American citizens of Harford County, including Civil War soldiers, housekeepers, laborers, children, and founding members of American Legion Post #55 in Bel Air. In 1873, Benjamin Hendon transferred 2 acres of property to the trustees of Ames Methodist Church to establish a cemetery for the “colored” people of Harford County, and a “colored” school was also erected at this location. Although Hendon Hill Cemetery records have not been located, historical research has identified 160 burials at this site, and 70% of the lots are unmarked.
