Wilson Place Museum in Menomonie preserves the home of a family central to the city’s early growth and traces several generations of Wilson, Stout, and LaPointe history through the building itself. Built in 1859 by Captain William Wilson, Menomonie’s first mayor and first state senator, the house began as a Colonial-style residence on a 22-acre estate. Later owners expanded it into an elaborate Queen Anne mansion, then in 1931 reduced and remodeled it into the Mediterranean villa that survives today. With many furnishings remaining on site since 1846, the house offers an unusually direct view of everyday life, changing tastes, wealth, and the families’ ties to Menomonie, the University of Wisconsin–Stout, and Knapp, Stout & Co.
